Let’s talk about: COMPETITION

“But what if you’re just inspiring and priming the next generation of competitors?” she asked, after I told her about my part time lecturing position.

It’s a valid point. It’s all too easy when you’ve worked hard for success to want to sit on top of your cloud like a selfish green goblin, “it’s mine, ALL MINE!” And one of the reasons why this selfish goblin rears its ugly head in the first place is because in reality it’s a scaredy-cat. “If I’m too open on social media, I’m basically giving away my secrets to my competitors.” Or, “I can’t write that, it’ll inspire the wrong people.” Or even, “If I give away my tips now, I’ll have nothing to talk about later.”

Sound about right?

Oh darling! Here’s the thing, your job is to inspire. You need to talk openly and share freely in order to inspire your ideal clients. Share your knowledge, share what makes you come alive, share your wisdom, share your flawed and fabulous human self. Yes, you’ll probably inspire your competitors along the way, but even though you might be working in the same industry, doing the same thing, and maybe even in the same city, your offering is totally different because of the one thing that you have that is unique to you – YOU.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that there are more than enough clients out there for all of us. Your service, your packages, your style and your personality won’t be, and shouldn’t be, right for everyone. Instead of trying to please everyone, instead, concentrate on serving those clients who are most right for you. The clients who want what you have to offer, those you can best serve, and those who inspire you to create the best work you can.

Wasting time worrying about the supposed competition takes you out of the game, it closes your mind and keeps you playing small. And you’re not here to play small. Be open, be someone who’s willing to share, be an educator, be a shining example of what’s possible, be an encourager, be a light, be a friend.

Community over competition, friends.

“When you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through the doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. No, you reach back.” – Michelle Obama
